The College of New Caledonia along with donor Brian Quarmby, Executive Chef at Betulla Burning are pleased to announce a new student award.
College of New Caledonia Professional Cook student Nathan Mickey is the first recipient of the Brad Horen Memorial Scholarship Award, which includes a scholarship, and an offer of apprenticeship to study and work with donor Brian Quarmby at one of Prince George’s newest restaurants, Betulla Burning.
“Nathan is very hard working, detail oriented and has innovative ideas, he appreciates the food movement that is embraced by Betulla Burning,” said Mandy Newcomb, CNC Professional Cook Instructor. “We are thrilled to work with restaurants in the community like Betulla Burning, and Chef Brian is a welcome asset to the CNC community through his work with students.”
The Brad Horen Memorial Scholarship came from Chef Brian Quarmby’s desire to recognize and remember his mentor, who passed away suddenly a couple of years ago.
“Myself and a few other cooks were trying to figure out what we could do to honor him (Brad Horen) and what he did for us and our career,” said Quarmby. “We decided that a scholarship at the local college in the cook program would be beneficial to the next generation of cooks.”
Nathan plans to start work at Betulla Burning next Tuesday, and he will join two other College of New Caledonia graduates currently working in the kitchen.
